How do I pick a paint color?!?!
This is not a specific question from a friend or reader but is a question I am asked over and over again. It’s a question that we, as home owners, will ask ourselves over and over again as the years go by and our home needs new paint. Paint trends change, babies are born, kitchens are remodeled…..all of these circumstances come with the age old question…..what color do I paint the room?
There are two methods I recommend for choosing a paint color. Both simple and complicated in their own special ways.
The first method is choosing your own paint color. Often times, people know what color they want to paint the room but are unsure of the exact shade to use. The best advice I can give you is to go to the paint store and pick up several paint swatch samples in the color range you’re considering painting the room. Tape them up on the wall of the room. Be sure to go in to take a good look at the paint samples at many times of the day. You want to see it in the morning, afternoon, and evening light along with the artificial light you would have at night. As you see the paint samples in the various light, the shades that are not right for the room will quickly stand out. As you remove these samples, you will soon find that the right shade for you stands out. The process of elimination is a beautiful thing.
In some instances, there may be a couple of different shades that you are torn between using. If this happens to you, I recommend getting small paint samples of each color and paint it directly on the wall. From there, you will be able to choose the perfect color for your room by observing the colors throughout the day. The most important part of this process is seeing the different paint colors in different types of light.
And if you still aren’t sure about which color to pick?! At this point when they both look good in any light, just pick the color you like better. It sounds simple but it will be the right color for your room because you love it.
The second method I recommend is getting a color consultation from a design professional. There are so many options for e-design that makes bringing a designer touch to your home much more affordable. E-design options can range from color consultations to entire room designs that include paint, furniture, accessories and floor plans. Whatever your design needs are, you can probably find an e-design option for it.
While there are many e-designers on the interwebs, it must be said that Ask A Designer Now is my personal favorite. You can check out my e-design packages here or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your e-design needs.
Painting is probably one of my favorite ways to spruce up a room. It’s affordable and offers so many possibilities! Embrace the potential and get painting! And don’t forget….before and after pictures are the best part.
